MIAMI, Fla. ? The Iowa State softball team ended the 2004 Delong Florida International Tournament with a 1-0 win against host Florida International on Sunday morning at Florida International's University Park. With the win, ISU's record improves to 1-4 on the young season. Iowa State placed third in the tournament after Sunday's win. Junior Misty Kimura and sophomore Cary Akins were named to the all-tournament team.
The game was scoreless until Diana Reuter scored a run in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Kristen Karanzias was on the mound for the Cyclones and picked up her first win of the season. She pitched a two-hitter and struck out four FIU batters while walking none. Kimura, freshman Ashley Killeen, junior Amber Wood and Akins all had hits for the Cyclones, while holding FIU to only two hits. ISU had three errors to Florida International's two errors. Amanda Nealer and Kendra Laminack split time on the mound for Florida International and combined for three strikeouts.
Iowa State will head to San Diego, Calif., to take part in the San Diego State Tournament starting Friday, Feb. 20, when it takes on Cal State Northridge starting at 5 p.m.
