AMES, Iowa ? Senior Misty Kimura had two hits including a double and freshman Jessica Quade had another hit but it wasn't enough as Iowa State fell to Iowa, 4-0, Thursday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 10-23 overall. Iowa improves to 28-15 overall. Freshman Alyssa Ransom was on the mound for the cyclones and took the loss, her record falling to 7-13. Iowa senior Lisa Birocci was in the circle for the Hawkeyes and picked up her 16th win of the season.
Iowa jumped on the scoreboard right away when Natalie Johnson scored right before the Cyclones turned their first double play of the year when they threw out both Abby Ruff and Stacy May. The Hawkeyes added two more runs in the second inning when Birocci hit a two-run home run also scoring Sami Baugh for two RBI. Iowa scored once more in the third when Johnson scored off an error by Cyclone second baseman Jennifer Bigbee. The Hawkeyes led 4-0 after three innings.
ISU's Misty Kimura hit her third double of the season in the fourth inning, but was stranded on second base when Quade hit a pop up to the short stop. The Cyclones threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh when Kimura had a base hit, Quade had a hit and Bigbee walked. But the Cyclones couldn't capitalize on the loaded bases and the game ended with a 4-0 Iowa win.
Iowa State had three hits and two errors, compared to Iowa's six hits and zero errors.
“They were just more determined today,” head coach Ruth Crowe said. “We didn't do a good job of making adjustments and we seemed a little scared at the plate. We've got to get our bats going and play a little tougher.”
Iowa State will play host to conference foe, Texas, on Saturday and Sunday, April 17-18, at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Ames. Game time for Saturday is 1 p.m. and the time for Sunday is set for 12 p.m.
