HOUSTON, Texas - Candi Kloecker struck out 13 and Christa Raley drove in two runs in the first inning to lead Houston past Iowa State, 2-0, in Crowne Plaza Classic action on Saturday night.
Houston (13-4) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Raley ripped a first inning single up the middle to plate Jessica Valis and Katie Bush.
That was all that Kloecker (6-1) would need as she retired the first 10 Iowa State (2-6) batters and 16 of the first 17.
Fallon Johnson reached on a leadoff single in the top of the seventh but Kloecker was again able to thwart the Cyclone threat by getting the next three batters out.
Johnson had two hits in the game and Beth Tharp added an eighth inning double for the Cyclones.
Amie Ford (1-3) pitched well but was dealt the loss. Ford allowed just three Houston hits, two of which were in the first inning, and retired the last 11 Cougar hitters to keep the Cyclones hopes alive.
Iowa State will face Texas State at 9 a.m. on Sunday in its final game of the Crowne Plaza Classic.
