DeLAND, Fla. - Florida used a pair of big innings to defeat Iowa State, 8-3, and end the Cyclones' nine game winning streak in action at the Stetson Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Gators scored two runs in the first inning and added another three in the sixth and seventh innings to propel them to the win.
Florida jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, using two hits and two hit batters to spark the early scoring.
Iowa State (11-7) cut into the Florida lead in the fourth inning as Katie Reichling singled to score Fallon Johnson, who had reached and advanced to second on an error to open the inning. Reichling's single extended her hitting streak to 10 games.
Reichling moved to second on a single up the middle by Jessica Quade to put runners on first and second with one out in the inning. Florida pitcher Lindsay Littlejohn retired Beth Tharp and Jennifer Bigbee to end the Cyclone rally with the score 2-1 in favor of the Gators.
Florida added three insurance runs in both the sixth and seventh innings on a two-run double by Lindsey Cameron and a three-run triple by Stacie Pestrak.
The Cyclones added a pair in seventh as Kristy Olsen reached on an infield single that scored pinch runner Stephanie Mosley. Tharp also came across after the ball deflected off the glove of the first baseman, cutting the score to the final margin of 8-3.
The Cyclones missed chance to cut into the deficit in the second as Reichling drew a walk to leadoff the inning and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Quade. After Tharp's ground out to shortstop, Bigbee laced a single to right field but Gator right fielder Kim Waleszonia came up firing and got Reichling at home for the third out of the inning.
Quade was 2-for-2 to lead Iowa State while Florida got a 3-for-3 performance from Lauren Roussell in the win.
Alyssa Ransom (5-4) got the loss for ISU, giving up four runs, two of which were earned, in five innings. Littlejohn (5-4) got the win for Florida, going the distance and allowing just three unearned runs on six hits.
