AMES, Iowa - Amie Ford tossed the first no-hitter at Iowa State since 1998 to lead the Cyclones past Vermont, 7-0, at the Charleston Southern Tournament in Summerville, S.C. The win, Iowa State's third straight, moved the Cyclones to 2-0 in the tournament.
Ford (3-3) struck out 13 batters and held the Catamounts hitless in the first no-hitter at Iowa State since Mandy Loushin no-hit Missouri on April 30, 1998.
Leading 1-0, ISU used a five-run fifth inning to erase any doubt that Ford would get the win. The inning, highlighted by Katie Reichling's second home run of the year, featured just three Cyclone hits but was extended by three Catamount errors.
Ford struck out Aimee Kern and Kate Ramsey before getting Kate DeForge to pop out to third in the final frame to secure her place in the Cyclone record books.
With Ford cruising, ISU got on the board in the third inning when Reichling singled to score Fallon Johnson.
The Cyclones would add another in the fifth as Beth Tharp doubled to left center to score Ashley Killeen.
Reichling went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Cyclones at the plate.
The Cyclones will face Campbell at 11 a.m. (CT) and the host, Charleston Southern, at 3 p.m.
