AMES, Iowa - Iowa State scored four first inning runs and Amie Ford limited UNC Greensboro to just four hits as the Cyclones defeated the Spartans, 4-2, in Charleston Southern Tournament action in Summerville, S.C. on Sunday.
Ford (5-3) continued her weekend dominance against UNCG (5-10) to pick up her fourth straight win after opening the season 1-3. Ford struck out 11 Spartan batters, marking her third straight game with at least 10 strikeouts.
The Cyclones (8-6) ripped off three hits to score four first inning runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Jennifer Bigbee that put the Cyclones on top to stay at 4-0. Bigbee's double came after a pair of run scoring hits by her teammates, a single by Katie Reichling and a double by Beth Tharp.
That would be all the help that Ford would need as the Spartans would get no closer than 4-2 after a sixth inning two-run homer off the bat of Gwen Johnson.
Ashley Killeen went 2-for-3 in the game to extend her hitting streak to five games while Reichling's first inning single pushed her streak to six games.
The Cyclones will face UNC Wilmington in the semifinals of bracket play. The Seahawks advanced with a 13-4 win over Central Connecticut State.
