CORVALLIS, Ore. - Iowa State scored a 196.250 to take second-place in the second session of the NCAA National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships to qualify to the school's first-ever "Super Six" appearance Thursday at Gill Coliseum on the campus of Oregon State University. Georgia won the second session and will join ISU and third-place Florida in the Super Six, along with Nebraska, Utah and Alabama from the first session. The Cyclones' score tied with Alabama for the third-best score of the 12 teams. Iowa State will start out on floor at Friday's Super Six, which will begin at 9 p.m. CST at Gill Coliseum. Anson will compete in the individual finals on vault and floor on Saturday.
"We are so thrilled and excited because we earned our right to be in the Super Six tonight," head coach K.J. Kindler said." "Our goal was to make it to tomorrow and we did just that. Jade (Kvach), one of our all-arounders all season was unable to compete on two events for us and we had kids stepped up for her on bars and floor. The team rallied when there was mistakes and stepped it up."
Iowa State trailed then-second place Florida by just .025 heading into the final rotation at sat at 147.200 after three events. The Cyclones went 49.050 on vault let by Janet Anson's 9.875 and Laura-Kay Powell's 9.825. Anson's vault earned her first team All-American honors on the event for the third-straight season. Powell's score gave her second-team honors for the second-consecutive season.
"I can't put it into words how excited I am," Anson said. "We worked for this all season and I was so happy that we were consistent all night. We have a great team and we are really pumped to compete at the Super Six."
After a bye in the opening rotation, Iowa State began on bars and put together a solid 49.075 to kick things off with its fifth 49.000-plus score of the season. After Kacey Oiness led off with a 9.250, Powell followed with a season-high 9.825. Freshman Ashley Kent, who competed on bars for the first time in six meets, followed suit, recording a 9.775. Katie Lasher and Anson scored dual 9.800s, before senior and three-time All-American Erin Dethloff anchored with a 9.875, her best score in postseason competition. Dethloff, the 2006 Big 12 and North Central Regional bars co-champ finished in a tie for fifth-place, earning her second-team All-American status for the fourth-straight year.
In the third rotation, the No. 3-ranked Cyclone beam squad posted a 48.825. Dethloff once again led the way for ISU, scoring a 9.825 to tie for eighth and earn second-team All-American honors on her third event. Anson went 9.800, while Kent and Powell recorded 9.750 each.
The Cyclones sat in third-place with a 97.900 after three rotations, one-tenth ahead of Arizona State. Georgia (98.550) and Florida (98.250) were in second and third, respectively.
Iowa State sat out its final bye before moving to floor, an event where the team held a No. 2 ranking (49.310) during the regular season. Ashley Alden led off with a 9.800 before the ISU senior trio of Oiness (9.850) Dethloff (9.875) and Powell (9.875) countered with huge scores, leaving things to Anson. The Kansas City, Mo., native put together the best routine for the Cyclones, scoring a 9.900 to give ISU a 49.300 heading into the final rotation. Anson's score earned her first team All-American honors for the first time, while Dethloff and Powell each were named second team All-Americans.
Anson and Dethloff tied for fourth in the all-around in the second session, earning them first team All-American honors and eighth-place as they each scored a 39.375. Georgia's Courtney Kupets won the all-around in the second session, scoring a 39.575.
