AMES, Iowa - Katie Reichling roped a triple in the fifth inning that scored Kristy Olsen and gave Iowa State a 3-2 win and a series split with Missouri on Wednesday afternoon at Southwest Athletic Complex.
The win, head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt's first over her alma mater, improved Iowa State to 23-23 overall and 5-9 in Big 12 play. Missouri falls to 21-23 overall and 5-9 in conference play with the loss.
With the game tied at 2-2 and both pitchers cruising, Reichling stepped to the plate and hit a one-out triple, her third of the season, into the right field corner to score Olsen and put the Cyclones on top for good. Olsen, who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, reached on an infield single and stole second base to open the inning.
Alyssa Ransom (12-13), who came on in relief, tossed four innings of two-hit ball to pick up the win. Ransom struck out five of the 11 batters she faced.
Missouri put runs on the board in first and third innings. The first inning run came on one of pitcher Jen Bruck's three doubles and the third inning run was scored on a fielder's choice on a ball off the bat of Janessa Roening.
Bruck's second double was nullified on a great defensive play by the Cyclones that resulted in Roening being thrown out at home. With two outs, Bruck drove the ball over Fallon Johnson's head in the deepest part of the park. Johnson chased it down and relayed to Cary Akins, who threw a perfect strike to Ashley Killeen to get Roening out at home.
The Cyclones were able to bounce back after both of Missouri's first two runs.
Beth Tharp delivered a two-out single in the second that scored Jennifer Bigbee and Killeen drove in her 40th run of the season, a double to right center that plated Olsen, to tie the game at 2-2.
Ransom coasted after the Cyclones took the lead in the fifth, allowing just a double to Bruck in the sixth inning. Bruck was later retired on a double play on a short pop fly to right field. Reichling caught Amanda Renth's pop up and fired to Jennifer Bigbee, who was covering second, for the double play.
The Cyclones will travel to Baylor for a pair of games against No. 18 Baylor this weekend.
