AMES, Iowa? Jiri Hubalek had a monster game Wednesday night, tallying his seventh career double-double with a career-high 27 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in Iowa State's 79-55 victory over Texas Southern in the second game of the Findlay Toyota Las Vegas Classic in Hilton Coliseum. The senior center was 10-of-14 from the floor to help ISU improve to 6-4 on the season.
"Guys found me in good positions and all I had to do was lay it in," Hubalek said. "I got into a good flow and we excecuted."
ISU made its first three shots to jump out to a 7-0 lead, but Texas Southern fought right back to even the game at 14-14 with 10:11 left in the opening half. Anthony Ike scored six of TSU's first 14 points, while Craig Brackins and Hubalek tallied four points a piece in the early going for the Cyclones.
The Tigers took their first lead of the game (19-18) with 8:12 left in the opening period when Sollie Norwood buried a trey. ISU forged ahead by three points (24-21), but Norwood drilled another trey to knot the score at 24-24 with 6:18 left.
The Cyclones ended the half strong, going on a 20-4 run to take a 44-28 lead at intermission. Hubalek scored nine points in the flurry and Diante Garrett made a last-second floater at the end of the half for the second consecutive game. Hubalek finished the first half with a double-double, recording 15 points and 11 boards in 16 minutes of action.
ISU extended its largest lead at 56-30 with 15:46 remaining in the game behind six more points from Hubalek. The Tigers kept fighting back, cutting the lead to 65-49 with 6:42 left behind a pair of treys from Norwood and Kevin Abanobi. However, ISU answered with a trey from Rahshon Clark, his third of the game, and a pair of free-throws from Hubalek to push ISU out in front 70-49 with just under six minutes left.
Bryan Petersen dished out a career-high seven assists with no turnovers to help ISU record a season-high 20 assists. ISU shot a season-high 94.7 percent from the free-throw line, connecting on 18-of-19 from the charity stripe. Brackins and Clark added 13 points each in the winning effort.
"It's sometimes not the most exciting thing to watch to dribble down and fight inside, but I thought it was beautiful," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "Craig and Jiri did a good job at finding one another and making good reads. Jiri was more in control tonight. He made the shots that he had been missing."
ISU travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to continue play in the Findlay Toyota Las Vegas Classic, Dec. 22-23 at the Orleans Arena. The Cyclones will face Purdue at 9:30 CST on Saturday and will play either Alabama or Missouri State on Sunday at 7 or 9:30 p.m. CST.
