ISU started out well in the vault competition. Freshman Megan Barnes was the Cyclones' top scorer in the event with a 9.85. She finished in a three-way tie for second place with OU's Haley DeProspero and Kiara Redmond. Barnes was followed by Thompson, who's 9.825 rounded out the top five in the event. ISU came out of the first rotation with a slight advantage, 49.025-48.850.
“We were rolling and it was a great feeling,” said head coach Jay Ronayne. “Vault went exactly how we wanted it to and we took that performance into the bars. Everything was going according to plan until the beam.”
On bars in the second rotation Thompson shined again for the Cyclones with a great routine. She nailed the landing and turned in a score of 9.825. Following Thompson, senior Katie Lasher performed another great bars set, also scoring 9.825. The Cyclones kept rolling on bars with Ceilia Maccani's 9.825. The trio of Cyclones took a three-way tie for third place in the final standings. Freshman Nikki Dilbert chipped in a 9.800, finishing fifth, to count toward the team score of 49.050. For the Sooners, Lori Winn had a 9.875 on bars in the first rotation, taking first-place honors.
Heading into the third rotation, the Cyclone faced beam with a narrow lead over the Sonners. ISU got off to a shaky start with a fall, but then the Cyclones' leading beam performer, Katie Sweetin, followed with a solid routine, scoring a 9.80. Thompson also hit her routine, but another fall meant that the Cyclones would have to count a fall on beam, opening the door for the Sooners. Cyclone senior Anson scored a season-high 9.90 on beam, just missing her career high of 9.9125. Anson and the Sooners' Lori Winn tied for first.
Even though OU started the final rotation with a fall on beam, the following five Sooners hit their routines while ISU had to count a fall on floor, very uncharacteristic of the Cyclones.
With the crowd behind her, Megan Barnes began to fuel the Cyclones with an energetic routine (9.75), but the momentum didn't stay with the Cyclones for long. Two consecutive mistakes took away any chance of a come back.
“The chances of this happening again are very un-likely,” Ronayne said. “Everyone that made a mistake is taking it to heart and they are going to take steps in the right direction to fix it.”
Despite their disappointment, the
“This is the first time she has competed with it this season,” ISU head coach Jay Ronayne said of Anson's tumbling pass. “It was something we were hoping to get in by the end of the year and she did well with it in practice so we used it today. She wants to be the very best and she is on her way.”
In the all-around, it was Anson who claimed the title (39.375). Thompson's season high (39.225) placed second, while Barnes (38.475) took a share of fifth place.
The Cyclones have more than a week to prepare for their next competition in
