STARKVILLE, Miss. ? Kennesaw State took the lead on a balk in the top of the fifth inning and added two more runs in the seventh to defeat Iowa State, 3-1, in the season opener for the Cyclones at the Bulldog Round Robin in Starkville, Miss., on Friday.
After Jennifer Nolan led off the fifth inning with a double and Keri McKee singled to move Nolan to third, Iowa State pitcher Alyssa Ransom was called for a balk that put Kennesaw State on top 1-0.
The Owls added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh with Nolan again providing the spark for the Owls.
Klair Wells singled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a double by Nolan. The pair moved around to score and give KSU all the insurance it needed.
The Cyclones (0-1) bats woke up in the seventh inning with Killeen roping her second double of the game with one out. Holly Jordan pinch ran for Killeen and advanced to third on a single by Katie Reichling. Jordan scored on a single by freshman Alex Johnson, cutting the lead to 3-1, but the Cyclones were unable to get anymore runs across as they fell to KSU.
Killeen paced Iowa State (0-1) with a pair of doubles in the game.
Nolan was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Janet Kearns (2-0) got the win for Kennesaw State, striking out four en route to her second win of the season.
Alyssa Ransom was handed the loss for Iowa State, allowing two earned runs on eight hits.
