STARKVILLE, Miss. ? Ashley Killeen hit a two-run home run and Amie Ford tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out a season-high nine batters as Iowa State defeated Purdue, 3-0, to pick up its first win of the season.
Killeen finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Freshman Alex Johnson, who's tied for the team lead with a .333 batting average, went 1-for-3. Fallon Johnson, Katie Reichling and Courtney Wray each added a hit for Iowa State (1-2).
The Cyclones, who struggled in the field on the season's first day, were solid behind Ford against Purdue, committing just one error.
Ford (1-1) took care of the rest limiting Purdue to just four hits, only two of which came after the first inning. Ford was able to strike out Daqueta Johnson and Jenna Alexander after the Boilermakers put runners on second and third with just one out in the opening frame.
Purdue (0-3) recorded another hit in the third but Ashley Hall was thrown out trying to reach second on a relay from Courtney Wray to Jennifer Bigbee.
The Cyclones got on the board in the bottom of the third on a RBI double by Reichling. Killeen reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score when Reichling drove Brooke Baker's pitch to left field for Iowa State's first hit of the game. The ball got past the left fielder and Killeen raced in to put the Cyclones on top 1-0 heading to the fourth.
A pair of Boilermakers reached base in the fifth but Ford was again able to get out of the jam by getting Hall to fly out to Reichling in left field.
Killeen gave the Cyclones some more breathing room in the fifth, blasting her first home run of the season that scored Jennifer Bigbee, who walked to lead off the inning. The home run was the 15th of Killeen's career, moving her into a tie for third in the Iowa State record books.
The Cyclones will face Mississippi State at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
