SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? Iowa State dropped a 1-0 extra inning contest to Sacramento State Wednesday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Shea Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.
The Cyclones (10-19) and Hornets (5-13) were scoreless until the eighth inning before the international tie breaker went into effect. In the eighth, Iowa State was unable to get a run across while Sacramento State got a single from Amy Jo McKenzie that scored the winning run.
Iowa State's Alyssa Ransom (1-5) was brilliant, tossing 7.1 innings of one-hit ball before McKenzie's single scored Keri Elias, who was placed on second base to start the inning. Ransom struck out four in the game to move into a tie for third all-time at ISU with Erica Martinez. Ransom and Martinez (2000-03) have each struck out 395 batters in their career.
Ransom was outdueled by Sacramento State's Kayla Meeks (2-5). Meeks allowed just one hit in the contest, a sixth inning single to Fallon Johnson, and struck out six to get the win.
In the game, just three runners reached base prior to the tie breaker rule going into effect. Both teams had one hit and Iowa State's Alex Johnson drew a first inning walk.
Iowa State and Sacramento State will meet in the second game of the doubleheader at approximately 5:30 p.m.
