SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? A four-run second inning proved to be the difference as Iowa State defeated Sacramento State, 6-3, Friday evening at the Sacramento Softball Complex.
The Cyclones (13-21) scored four in the second and two in the seventh to give them a 6-3 win over the Hornets (5-16).
Sacramento State grabbed an early lead on Amy Jo Makenzie's single in the first that scored Amy Topkins and gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
Iowa State got on the board in the second as a pair of freshmen, Amanda Bradberry and Courtney Wray, drove in runs with singles. Bradberry's hit scored Kristen Karanzias, who reached on a fielder's choice. Pinch runner Kelsey Kidwell scored on an error by the catcher while Wray singled to right field to score Bradberry and Kristy Olsen and put ISU on top 4-1.
Melissa Cross' run scoring single pulled the Hornets to within two at 4-2 after three innings.
Wray drove in a run on her second hit of the game and Bradberry scored on another error by the catcher to increase the lead to 6-2 after six and a half innings.
The Hornets scored a run in the seventh but were unable to mount a rally as Iowa State went on to win 6-3.
Bradberry finished the game 3-for-3 with a run batted in and two runs scored to lead Iowa State. Bradberry's fellow freshmen, Alex Johnson and Courtney Wray, each collected two hits in the win. Kristy Olsen improved to 11-for-11 this year on stolen bases as she swiped a base in the second.
Alyssa Ransom improved to 3-6 after allowing just two runs on seven hits in the game. Freshman Charissa Carlin picked up her first career save, tossing three innings and allowing just one run.
Iowa State will continue tournament play with a 2:30 p.m. contest against Mercer Saturday.
