Cal Poly (22-7) had 11 hits and scored all 10 runs in the first three innings of the game to defeat the Cyclones for the second time in just over a week. The Mustangs beat ISU, 4-3, last weekend at the National Invitational Softball Tournament in
Krysten Cary paced Cal Poly, going 2-for-3 with a three-run homer, and Melissa Pura also went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Both Cary and Pura scored three runs each.
Freshmen Courtney Wray and Amanda Bradberry collected the only hits for the Cyclones. Wray's infield single in the third inning scored Fallon Johnson, who reached on a fielder's choice before stealing the 23rd base of her career to get into scoring position.
The Mustangs got on the board with a three-run first that was keyed by a hit batter, a walk and an error. Jackie Gehrke-Jones then delivered with a two-run single with two-outs to put Cal Poly on top 3-0.
With the Cyclones still within striking distance, Cal Poly broke the game open with a five-run second inning. Pura and Cary each delivered run scoring hits in the inning in addition to a pair of RBI hits by Jenna Maiden, Sarah Iwata and Stephanie Tam.
Wray beat out an infield single to third base to score Johnson in the third but that was all the scoring the Cyclones would get as Cal Poly tacked on two more runs on Cary's homer in the third and went on to win in five innings due to the run-rule.
The Cyclones were unable to get much going against Cal Poly hurler Helen Pena (5-3), who allowed just two hits in five innings of work.
Alyssa Ransom (4-7) got the loss for the Cyclones.
