LINCOLN, Neb.- The Iowa State men's track and field team closed out the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a third-place finish in the 4 x 400-meter relay on the Ed Weir Track. The Cyclones scored 34 1/2 points and finished 11th overall. Oklahoma won the team title with 110 1/2 points.
“We're disappointed in placing where we did yesterday,” Iowa State men's track and field head coach Steve Lynn said. “But instead of hanging their heads, our kids came back and competed very well today.”
The 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of Jared Lewis, Elijah Braimah, Jared Graham and Tony Stanfield, earned ISU's highest finish of the day, taking third with a time of 3:08.46. Six of the top 10 ranked 4x400 teams and 10 of the top 20 quartets nationally were represented in the Big 12 field. Baylor won the final race of the day in 3:03.94.
Freshman Julian Morris equaled his career best of 6-10 3/4 to tie for fifth in the high jump. The two-time Minnesota state prep champion had placed fourth in the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
Another Iowa State newcomer, freshman Guor Majak, wrapped a highly successful visit to Lincoln with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a 14:39.45 clocking. Majak finished third in the 10,000-meter run on Friday. Junior Jayden Russ ran to a sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:09.48.
“Guor is just a freshman,” Lynn said. “He's going to be very good before he is done at Iowa State.”
The 4x100-meter relay juggled its lineup going into that race and clocked a 40.77 effort to place sixth in the event. The squad consisted of Lewis, Braimah, Stanfield and freshman David Dawson.
The Cyclones now look forward to the NCAA Regionals on May 25-26 in Des Moines, Iowa. Iowa State's 4 x 400-meter relay, Russ in the steeplechase, Lewis in the 100 meters and 200 meters, Braimah in 200 meters, Graham in the 400 meters and Morris in the high jump will now prepare for the regional. Big 12 champion decathlete Neil Hines is already qualified for the NCAA Championship, June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif.
