“It's like a mini national meet when you look at the tremendous competition that we will face,” head coach Dick Lee said. “Many of the people competing this weekend will also be competing at the NCAA national championships. This meet is one of the biggest meets of the year that we train for all season. It is exciting.”
Senior Rebecca Williams will stir up the 100-meter hurdle competition this weekend competing in her final Big 12 Conference meet. Williams is the reigning indoor champion and is currently ranked second in the conference with her school-record effort at the Drake Relays of 13.29 seconds. Williams will attempt to dismantle top seeded hurdler Jennifer Williams from Texas A&M who holds a time of 13.24 seconds.
“I think Rebecca has a really good chance to bring home a title this weekend,” said sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts. “She still hasn't put together that perfect race yet and I think this weekend could be her shot to do it.”
Teammate Jenna Caffrey will also be battling for a top spot in the event. Caffrey, only a freshman, finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles at the indoor conference meet and has already regionally qualified. The
“Jenna is a gamer,” Roberts said. “The bigger the race, the better she is. If you put her in a high pressure situation she usually rises to the occasion. I think she will be ready to fight for a top spot this weekend.”
Last season Sara Boisen achieved her goal of running in the NCAA national championships. This season she will look to do the same. The senior has already qualified for the regional meet in
Lisa Koll and Jenny Mockler will head the distance crew in a meet that is loaded with some of the nation's best endurance athletes. Koll has regionally qualified in the 5,000-meter run and currently possesses the fifth-best time in the conference. The freshman will have her hands full possibly competing against Sally Kipyego, the NCAA indoor 5,000-meter champion. The
“Lisa has had a great year,” said Lee. “She is feeling very confident and she is very tough mentally and physically. We feel like there is a good chance of scoring in both the 10K and 5K.”
Mockler, the senior, will make her last conference appearance this weekend but it will not be her last collegiate competition. Mockler has qualified for the NCAA regional meet in the 800-meter run with her effort of 2:08.27 at the Drake Relays. This weekend Mockler is scheduled to compete in the 800-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay.
Senior Leigh Wagner will likely be bidding farewell to her teammates after this weekend. Wagner will travels back home town for her career finale in the high jump. Jumps coach Ron McEachran says Wagner has been a valuable leader on the squad throughout her time at ISU.
“She has been a tremendous addition to our program in a lot of different ways going beyond her performances,” McEachran said. “She is a good person whose leadership has been great. We are sad to see her leave but on the other hand it is exciting to see her grow up and go into her life's work.”
With a strong performance last Saturday at the Nebraska Invitational, Agata Kosuda recorded her first marks of the season with a monster leap of 41-4 ? in the triple jump. Kosuda returns to the lineup this week in hopes of claiming a Big 12 crown from stiff competition.
“She is definitely one of the top competitors in the meet that has a chance to do well and a possibly even win it,” McEachran said. “She has had plenty of good jumps this season but a little bit of trouble finding the board. I think she is ready to go and has a great opportunity ahead of her.”
The Cyclones will kick off the championships Friday at 6:45 p.m. with Koll and Mackenzie Madison of Ankeny running the 10,000-meter run. Events are scheduled to conclude on Sunday evening with the 4x400-meter relay at 5:35 p.m. Complete results will be posted on cyclones.com.
