MADISON, Wis. – The Cyclones tallied up more NCAA West Prelims marks including times that rank top 10 nationally as competition for the week began at the Wisconsin Badger Challenge and Payton Jordan Invite.
In the men's weight throw at Wisconsin, all four Cyclones hit either season bests or personal bests. Zach Verzani placed second with 210-4 (64.10m) just off his PR that ranks second in ISU history (213-4). Garret Wagner also neared his personal record of 205 feet (No. 5 ISU) with a season-best 203-3 (61.97m) to place fourth.
Nathan Rotherham had a four-foot PR of 192-11 to debut at No. 10 on ISU's all-time list and place seventh, while Lucas Morrison also brought in a best mark with 185-6 to take eighth at the Badger Challenge.
The women then threw the hammer, with Candra King taking the victory with a best mark on the day of 204-6 (62.33m).
In the discus, Daniel Norris took bronze throwing an Iowa State best of 185-4 (56.51m). Brandon Fischer placed fourth, while Lucas Morrison hit a PR of 173-7 (52.91m) for seventh. Michael Etuma also moved onto the final and placed eighth.
Into the night at the Payton Jordan Invite hosted by Stanford, Makayla Clark opened the meet with a strong season best in the invite 800m of 2:03.23 to place third. The time currently ranks 20th in the West region.
Joash Ruto then took the invite 3,000m steeplechase win in 8:30.14 in his outdoor opener. Ruto's time currently ranks 10th in the nation. Quinton Orr came less than half a second off his personal best as he took fifth in 8:39.59.
The women then went blazing fast in the invite 5,000m, with Betty Kipkore taking the win in 15:20.12. Mercyline Kirwa finished right after with 15:20.96. The times are the fastest by a Cyclone since 2013 and rank third and fourth in program history. The duo also ranks eighth and ninth in the nation. The Cyclones now have three women who have run 15:32 or faster this season as Maelle Porcher clocked her PR earlier this season.
The men did the same as four men put up top 10 all-time Iowa State performances racing in the 5,000m. Robin Kwemoi Bera now ranks as the second-fastest Cyclone in history with 13:15.64, standing only behind Jonah Koech's 1993 school record of 13:10.95. It is the third-fastest time in the nation this season.
