ISU Wins Against UNI and Central Michigan

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa ? Third-seeded Iowa State bounced back from an opening round loss to defeat a pair of opponents in Northern Iowa (31-3) and fourth-seeded Central Michigan (24-6), before suffering a 22-16 setback to the tournament's top-seed, Penn State Saturday evening at the National Duals in the UNI-Dome. Iowa State will wrestle for seventh place against eighth-seeded Northwestern at 9 a.m. Sunday. After four duals Saturday, ISU's mark stands at 9-3.
“The most important thing is that we got in some good matches,” Iowa State head coach Cael Sanderson said. “I thought we wrestled well most of the day. We get another chance on Sunday.”
Picking up a trio of victories in consolation action were Nick Fanthorpe (133), Jon Reader (165) and Jake Varner (184). Both fourth-ranked Fanthorpe (19-3) and sixth-ranked Reader (18-2) tallied two major decisions. Fanthorpe has five majors in his sophomore campaign, while Reader has notched six. Varner (16-0) registered his fifth pin of the year and marked the only fall for Iowa State on the day.
ISU won nine of 10 bouts against Northern Iowa en route to a 31-3 victory. Three Cyclones registered major decisions in the dual. Fanthorpe etched an 18-6 win over Josh Baldridge at 133 pounds, Sanderson downed Tyson Reiner 12-4 and 197-pounder David Bertolino picked up his third victory over Andrew Anderson on a 11-2 win. Pulled from redshirt, ISU true freshman Tyler Clark recorded his first collegiate win on an 8-2 decision over Caleb Flores at 125 pounds.
Taking on fourth-seeded Central Michigan, ISU rolled by winning eight bouts for a 24-6 dual win, including two overtime victories. At 174 pounds, Aron Scott handed fourth-ranked Brandon Sinnott a 3-2 decision in a bout that was pushed to the second tiebreaker. Varner followed at 184 pounds by scoring a takedown on the edge of the mat against Christian Sinnott for a 4-2 decision that was also pushed to a second tiebreaker. At heavyweight, fourth-ranked David Zabriskie used a takedown in the closing seconds to defeat No.3 Bubba Gritter 4-3. Reader provided bonus points with a 10-1 major decision of Pete Puckette. Clark opened the dual by scoring a 6-2 upset over 12th-ranked Luke Smith.
“This is a great tournament to be able to wrestle different guys that you don't see all the time but you will see at the NCAA Tournament,” Zabriskie said.
In its third consecutive dual, Iowa State fell to the tournament's top-seed, Penn State, 22-16. Fanthorpe put the first points on the board for the Cyclones with a 15-4 major decision over Tim Haas as ISU moved in front of the Nittany Lions 4-3. PSU beat Iowa State by taking 141, 149 and 157 pounds to fall behind 13-4. Reader put the Cyclones back into contention with a 4-1 decision over Dave Rella and Varner pulled the team within three points on a 2:53 stick of Phil Bromberger. Zabriskie closed out the dual with 3-1 sudden victory win over Stefan Tighe, but his efforts were not enough to knock off the Nittany Lions.
