AMES, Iowa? Iowa State held off a late Missouri rally to record its first Big 12 victory of the season, 72-67 Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones had four players record double figures to improve their record to 11-6 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 action.
"This is a great win for us," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "I think Missouri is an outstanding basketball team. For us to do this on a night where we honored Barry Stevens was outstanding. For our guys to come back and turn the tables after really struggling at Baylor is great for us."
Iowa State got off to a hot start, forging a 21-8 lead with 11:58 remaining in the opening period. Jiri Hubalek made his first five field goals, tallying 11 of ISU's first 21 points. The Cyclones broke through Missouri's full-court pressure on a number of occasions, forcing the Tigers to fall back in their halfcourt defense for a couple of possessions.
ISU's lead grew as large as 14 points (26-12) after a long Bryan Petersen trey, but Missouri kept chipping away with quick baskets. The Tigers went on an 11-5 run to make it a 31-23 game with 5:59 left after DeMarre Carroll scored on a lay-in. MU then scored seven unanswered points to cut the lead to five points, but Craig Brackins ended the half with a lay-in off a nice pass from Diante Garrett to give ISU a 39-32 lead at the break.
The Cyclones opened the second half on a 9-4 run to take a 48-36 lead with 15:23 remaining in the game. Wesley Johnson capped off the run on a driving shot and a tip-slam on back-to-back possessions.
The Tigers kept the pressure on and cut the lead to 57-49 with 5:45 left after Stefhon Hannah converted a steal into a lay-up. Matt Lawrence shortly after buried a trey to inch the Tigers closer at 60-54 with 3:14 remaining in the game, but Brackins hit a key turnaround in the paint on ISU's next possession to stop the Tiger momentum.
Wesley Johnson made a lay-up to keep ISU up by eight points, but the Tigers would not go away, as Hannah knocked down a trey to make it a 64-59 game with 56 seconds left. Hannah then made another lay-up after Wesley Johnson missed two free-throws to cut it to 64-61 with 43 seconds remaining. Brackins was fouled immediately on ISU's next possession, and the freshman calmly sank a pair of free-throws to push the Cyclones back in front 66-61.
MU was still not done, however. Marshall Brown banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it a 70-67 ballgame with three seconds left. ISU then threw a deep inbound pass to the other side of the court where it was tipped out of bounds by the Tigers with a second remaining. The Tigers fouled Wesley Johnson and the junior sank both free-throws to seal the victory for the Cyclones.
For the most part, the Cyclones handled the Tigers' frenetic pressure, winning the turnover battle, 10-17. ISU did not get a point from its bench, as all five starters contributed to the Cyclones' 72 points.
Wesley Johnson recorded his first double-double of the season and 12th of his career with 20 points and 11 boards. Rahshon Clark finished with a season-high 16 points and tallied three blocks and two steals. Clark needs just four points to join ISU's 1,000-point club. Jiri Hubalek poured in 17 points in the Cyclone victory.
Clark's two steals ties him with Barry Stevens at No. 12 on ISU's career steal chart (132). ISU honored Stevens at halftime, retiring his No. 35 jersey in a special ceremony.
ISU plays host to Oklahoma State on Saturday (Jan. 19) at 12:45 p.m.
