Cyclone Rally Falls Short Against Fullerton

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Iowa State rallied to score two runs in the seventh but it wasn't enough as Cal State Fullerton held off the Cyclones, 3-2, at the San Diego Classic on Friday afternoon.
Cal State Fullerton (14-10-1) pitcher Jessica Doucette held the Cyclones (18-6) hitless through the first six innings. Kelsey Kidwell broke up the perfect game with a bunt single in the top of the seventh and came around to score as Courtney Wray extended her hitting streak to nine games with a triple to right center. Alex Johnson then beat out an infield single and advanced on a ground out to put runners on second and third with one out. Wray tried to come in to score as the ball bounced away from the catcher on a pitch, but she was tagged out at home. Jacquelyn Beatty then singled to the outfield to score Johnson but Doucette got Sydni Jones to pop out to second to end the game.
The Titans put three on the board in the first as Kiki Munoz singled to score a run and Lauren Lupinetti hit a two-run triple off ISU starter Charissa Carlin.
With a three-run lead Doucette (8-4) put it on cruise control and kept the Cyclones from getting anything going. The senior hurler finished with three strikeouts.
Carlin (7-4) got chased without completing an inning. She gave up three runs on four hits. Ford kept the Cyclones in the game, tossing 5.1 innings of shutout ball in relief.
Iowa State will continue tournament action Saturday with contests against New Mexico State and San Diego slated to begin at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
