AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State gymnastics team continued its string of strong performances, putting up a score of 194.425 against Minnesota, their second highest score of the season. But it wasn't enough to beat the Gophers Sunday as Minnesota posted a 194.950 to take home the win.
Nikki Dilbert earned the “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” for the Cyclones, which goes to the ISU gymnast whose performance captivated and inspired coaches, teammates and fans. Dilbert placed first on both the bars and floor to lead the Cyclones.
“We had a decent score as far as what we've been doing this season,” ISU assistant coach Jay Santos said. “The small mistakes we made ate away at us and they built up to cost us the win.”
The Cyclones started very strong, earning a 48.675 on vault in the first rotation. Four of ISU's five counting scores were 9.725 or higher, led by Jasmine Thompson's 9.775. Jennifer Salfen and Katie Sweetin recorded scores of 9.750 while Megan Barnes added a 9.725. Minnesota scored a 47.975 on bars.
Minnesota ate into the Iowa State lead with a 48.775 on vault, cutting ISU's lead to 96.975-96.750 after two rotations. Dilbert led the Cyclones on bars with a score of 9.850 that tied her career high. Ceilia Maccani added a score of 9.775 and senior Kristy Bellinger set a career-high with a score of 9.675.
Minnesota took a slim 145-725-145.650 advantage after the third rotation. The Cyclones put up a 48.275 on beam, while Minnesota scored 48.975 on floor. Thompson led ISU with a 9.850 while Sweetin tied her career-high with a score of 9.825 for the Cyclones on the beam.
Iowa State was strong on floor, reaching a team score of 48.775. It wasn't enough to take down Minnesota, who scored 49.225 on beam to win the meet. Dilbert led the Cyclones on floor with a 9.875. Thompson tied her season-best with a 9.850 and Sweetin matched that score. Anna Robey also tied her career-best with a 9.775.
Minnesota's Carmelina Carabajal won the all-around competition with a score of 39.225. Dilbert finished third with a score of 39.125.
Iowa State's next meet will be Friday when the Cyclones travel to face Iowa.
