ATHENS, Ga. ? Against the best in the nation, the Iowa State gymnastics team turned in one of its best performances of the season. The No. 1 Georgia Gym Dogs had two 10.0 performances on its way to a 196.750-194.450 win. The score for Iowa State was their third best of the season and was put together in the home gym of the three-time defending NCAA champions.
“I honestly don't feel like anyone was intimidated and the team certainly didn't show it,” ISU head coach Jay Ronayne said. “With that in mind, I feel a lot more confident heading into Big 12s.
“We had solid performances on the first event through beam and we felt like things were in the right places. In that regard, we are improving. We still need to work on sticking landings. We are giving away a lot of tenths of points on our landings. That aspect of our performance will definitely be a focus this week.”
Jasmine Thompson came though big for Iowa State in the first rotation, putting up a 9.800 on bars. Nikki Dilbert added a 9.725 as the Cyclones scored 48.525 as a team. Georgia was able to put together a 48.950 on vault to take a lead after one event behind a 9.950 by Katie Heenan.
The Cyclones were running on all cylinders on vault in rotation two. Their 48.750 was just .1 short of their season high as Jennifer Salfen led the way with a 9.825, her second-best score of the season. Katie Sweetin added a 9.800 and Megan Barnes put together a 9.775. Georgia was able to keep a 97.975-97.275 lead thanks to a perfect 10.0 by Grace Taylor on bars.
Iowa State took its strong performances to the floor for the third rotation, earning a score of 48.875. ISU came within .1 of tying their season-best mark, set against Iowa on Feb. 22. Thompson tied her season-best with a 9.850 while Sweetin (9.825) and Dilbert (9.800) both had outstanding routines. The Bulldogs put up a 49.250 on beam, thanks to two scores of 9.900, to keep a 147.225-146.150 lead.
The Cyclones scored 48.300 on beam to reach their score of 194.450. Thompson finished off her strong night with a 9.825, while Ceilia Maccani tied her career best with a score of 9.800. Georgia's Katie Heenan was given a perfect 10 to lead the Gym Dogs.
Heenan claimed the all-around title with a 39.775. Thompson was second with a 39.125, tying her season-best all-around score. Dilbert finished third with a 38.850.
Iowa State will begin postseason action on March 29, with the Big 12 Championship in Norman, Okla.
