FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Three more qualified for nationals in the final day of competition for the men at NCAA West Prelims.
The men will enter NCAA Championships with five entries throughout the 10,000m, 3,000m steeple, 800m and 5,000m.
Joash Ruto booked a return trip to nationals in the 3,000m steeplechase winning his heat for the automatic advancement in 8:26.87. Ruto had a final lap of 64 seconds to take down his season best while the time went on to stand as the fastest in the region. It also downed the facility record that has stood since 2002.
Jailan Sohna was the next ticket puncher as the freshman went the fastest he ever has in the 800m clocking 1:46.48. Sohna had a big close to take second in his heat for the automatic advancement. The time now ranks eighth in school history.
In the 5,000m, Robin Kwemoi Bera advanced to nationals in a second event after qualifying in the 10,000m Wednesday. Bera took second in the first semifinal for the automatic advancement, timing in at 13:41.22.
In earlier running events, Emanuel Galdino had the ninth-fastest time in 1,500m quarterfinals but missed out on a time qualifier to advance. Galdino clocked a season-best 3:38.73, .47 seconds off his personal best.
Devan Kipyego ran in the first 1,500m quarterfinal and came one spot off the final automatic advancing spot taking sixth in his heat, .07 seconds off the fifth-place heat finisher.
Tyson Seeser capped his freshman season tying for 15th in the high jump, with the top 12 moving onto nationals. Seeser cleared his first two bars on the first attempt and ended with a clearance of 6-11 1/2 (2.12m), missing the next bar of 7-1 1/2.
Tomorrow is the final day of NCAA Prelims, with women competing for the chance to advance to nationals. ISU's first event is the discus at 1 p.m.
