“Indiana is a good team to face in the first round,” associate head coach Cody Sanderson said. “Our guys wrestled tough and now we're getting ready for the next match.”
Setting the tone for the strong Cyclone effort, 125-pounder Tyler Clark, ranked fifth nationally, knocked off defending NCAA champion Angel Escobedo in the opening match of the dual, 3-1. Clark scored a last-second takedown in the third period on the edge of the mat to secure the upset.
“I prepare for every match the same way,” Clark said. “I focus on the things I can control. Anyone can be beat on any day. It felt good to go out there and wrestle my hardest, especially against the returning NCAA champion.”
For Escobedo, it was only his second defeat in the last two seasons. The junior Hoosier was 34-1 last season en route to the Big Ten and NCAA 125-pound titles and 9-0 this season before his loss to Clark. The Cyclone sophomore is 15-2 this season.
Following the upset at 125 pounds, ISU 133-pounder Nick Fanthorpe, ranked sixth, recorded a pin against Indiana's Matt Ortega in 4:44. Fanthorpe was awarded the pin from the neutral position while attempting to secure a takedown on the Indiana wrestler.
Iowa State's Nick Gallick, the second-ranked 141-pounder in the nation, held off Andrae Hernandez of Indiana by way of a 4-2 decision. Cyclone Mitch Mueller won by decision for the Cyclones in the next match at 149 pounds in a 3-0 shutout.
It took ISU's Cyler Sanderson extra time to finish off Indiana's Matt Coughlin at 157 pounds. The fifth-ranked Cyclone took down the Hoosier 10 seconds into the sudden victory period to win by decision, 3-1. Jon Reader followed for Iowa State with a major decision at 165 pounds, 9-0, over Indiana's Paul Young.
Making the first start of his young Cyclone career, redshirt freshman Andrew Sorenson won in overtime against the No. 12-ranked Trevor Perry of Indiana at 174 pounds. Sorenson was able to escape from Perry in the first top-bottom period and rode out Perry to secure the win, 2-1 (TB1).
ISU's redshirt freshman Jerome Ward, ranked 20th at 184 pounds, secured a decision over Indiana's Eric Cameron, 2-0. The Cyclones' two-time NCAA finalist Jake Varner tallied three takedowns en route to a 9-0 major decision over Indiana's Justin Kuhn at 197 pounds. In the final match of the dual, ISU heavyweight David Zabriskie secured the shutout dual victory for the Cyclones by edging Indiana's Nate Everhart by a score of 3-1.
