COLUMBIA, Mo.?The Iowa State soccer team equalized in the 68th minute off a goal from senior Amanda Nimtz, but No. 23 Missouri reeled off a pair of goals in less than a minute to distance itself from the Cyclones 3-1 Friday evening in Big 12 Conference action.
After a Kristin Andrighetto goal gave the league leaders the 1-0 edge in the 49th minute, Nimtz leveled the match at 1-1 at the 67:28 mark. However, two goals by the Tigers in the span of 16 seconds put the match out of reach. The Tigers' Jessie Crabtree and Andrighetto scored at the 72:53 and 73:08 marks, respectively.
Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger felt the goal scored by Nimtz was rewarding of the senior's efforts throughout the match.
“Amanda scored a great goal,” Dillinger said. “There was a scramble in the box and she stuck with it and finished the ball. Amanda played incredible and performed well all over the field throughout the night.
“After we scored, I felt the momentum shifted in our favor but we couldn't capitalize on it,” Dillinger said.
For the match, Missouri (11-4-3; 6-0-2 Big 12) outshot Iowa State (7-7-4; 2-5-0 Big 12) 18-7, while the Tigers boasted a 4-1 corner-kick edge.
Dillinger was pleased with her squad's effort.
“We played hard,” Dillinger said. “It was a good game and both teams played well. Our defense played hard. We battled, challenged and competed hard the whole match.”
Iowa State senior goalkeeper Ann Gleason went the distance and registered five saves. The Stillwater, Minn, native's record moved to 7-7-4 on the campaign, as Gleason has played every minute in goal for the Cyclones in 2009.
The Cyclones are back in action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a road tilt at Kansas.
