AMES, Iowa? The No. 19 Iowa State gymnastics team tried to overcome a 1.6-point deficit in the final event (floor) Thursday night in Hilton Coliseum but came up just short in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series match up, falling 194.375-193.800.
The three final Cyclone floor competitors (junior Anna Robey, freshman Michelle Browning and senior Jasmine Thompson) scored 9.850, 9.900 and 9.875 respectively, to close the night out. The furious finish gave the Cyclones a 48.825 on floor while the Hawkeyes tallied a 47.800 on beam. However, the Hawkeyes did just enough to squeak out the win.

“The way we ended the meet is what we need to get done for the entire night,” said Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne. “However, we need to set it up by hitting on all the events in the first place.”
Freshman Michelle Browning took home the “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” which goes to the Iowa State gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans. Browning won the floor title with her 9.900.
The Cyclones opened on vault while their instate rivals competed on bars. The first ISU competitor for the evening, senior Ceilia Maccani, got the Cyclones their desired start with a career-high-tying 9.825 and junior Megan Barnes added a 9.800. Maccani's effort gave her a first-place tie on the event. Iowa State took a slim 48.775-48.725 after the first rotation.
The two teams swapped events as the Cyclones went to bars while the Hawkeyes rotated to vault. Iowa inched past Iowa State at the midway point, outscoring the Cyclones 48.825-48.600 in the second rotation. Thompson led Iowa State on bars with a 9.775. Halfway through the meet, Iowa led narrowly, 97.550-97.375.
The third rotation pitted ISU (0-6) on beam, while Iowa (7-3) was competing on floor. The Cyclones were forced to count a pair of falls on beam as they scored a 47.600. Barnes took top honors for the Cyclones with a 9.800. On floor, Iowa scored a strong 49.025 to take a 146.575-144.975 edge.
Ronayne feels the lack of consistency on all events is what is plaguing his squad.
“It is the most frustrating part of this sport,” he said. “We need to get the job done when it needs to get done. I need gymnasts that step up and deliver.”
Iowa and Iowa State will both head to Iowa City for their next competition when the two face off Monday in another Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series match up at 7 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
