Cyclones Get Extra Inning Win Over Presbyterian

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? Freshman Katie Harms hit an eighth inning single to lift Iowa State past Presbyterian, 6-5, in the first game of the Jacksonville Tournament. With the win, Iowa State improves to 5-0 on the season.

Presbyterian (0-1) scored five runs in the first two innings. The Blue Hose got to ISU pitcher Charissa Carlin early, scoring four runs on two hits and two walks in the first. Mary Gordon had the big hit for the Blue Hose, smacking a two-run double to left center.

Presbyterian added another in the second inning on a run-scoring single by Katie Anderson. Rachel Zabriskie relieved Carlin with one out in the inning and got Rachel Parker to line into a double play to end the threat.

The Cyclones got on the board in the fourth inning, cutting the lead to 5-3.

Alex Johnson got the rally started with a single, which was Iowa State's first hit of the game. Sydni Jones followed with another single to move Johnson to second. After Harms popped out for the second out of the inning, senior Jacquelyn Beatty singled to score Johnson. Carrie Monroe then roped a double center to plate Jones and Beatty.

The teams went down quietly in the fifth and sixth before ISU tied it up with a two-run bottom of the seventh.

Presbyterian pitcher Brittany Howell walked Monroe to lead off the inning. After Monroe advanced to second on a wild pitch, Heidi Kidwell hit the Cyclones third double of the game to trim the lead to one. Heidi Kidwell advanced to third on a passed ball and came into score on Carleigh Berry's ground out; sending the game to extra innings tied 5-5.

Zabriskie sent the Blue Hose down in order in the eighth and Harms singled to score Amanda Bradberry and give ISU the 6-5 win in the bottom half. Bradberry had been placed on second to start the inning per the international tiebreaker rule.

Zabriskie (3-0) got the win, allowing just three hits and striking out seven in the winning effort. Gordon (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Blue Hose.

Berry notched her seventh stolen base of the season in the win.

The Cyclones out-hit the Blue Hose, eight to seven.

The Cyclones will resume tournament action when they face host Jacksonville tonight at 5 p.m.
