Leading Off
Iowa State's home unbeaten streak will be put to the test this weekend, as the Cyclones are set to face a ranked opponent for the second-straight weekend. ISU will aim to snap a three-game conference skid against No. 14 Arizona in the teams' first regular-season meeting as members of the Big 12.
The Cyclones come into the weekend coming off a midweek, run-rule win over UNI. ISU notched double-figure hits and runs against the Panthers and moved to a perfect 3-0 in midweek contests this season.
Arizona has won six-straight games, including five in a row in conference play. Last weekend, the Wildcats swept Baylor, outscoring the Bears 27-12. UA is one of just two teams to have handed No. 2 Texas Tech a loss this season.
Scouting the Cyclones
Iowa State boasts a balanced lineup, as seven Cyclones are batting over .300 through eight weeks of play. Reagan Bartholomew leads the team with a batting average of .441 – good enough for sixth in the conference. Bartholomew has 45 hits, two more than teammate Jessie Clemons, and eight homers to lead the team.
Bartholomew (34) and Clemons (32) are both neck and neck in runs scored, while Clemons leads the team in doubles with 15. Kadence Shepherd is tied with Bartholomew with eight homers to lead the team, while both Tatum Johnson and Sydney Malott have seven apiece. Johnson leads the team in RBI with 34.
In the circle, five Cyclones have seen action. Lauren Schurman leads the way with a team-low ERA of 3.54. Schurman has hurled 83 innings, a team-high, and owns 49 punchouts, also a team-high. Freshmen Liv Palumbo (5-2) and Hailey Holtz (0-0), senior Jaiden Ralston (1-4), and Michigan State transfer Ava Mullen (3-3) round out the pitchers for ISU.
The Cyclones own a .325 batting average and have produced 230 runs on 296 hits. The team has 117 extra-base hits with 216 RBI and has drawn 134 walks. ISU holds a collective 4.61 ERA and fields the ball at a .971 clip.
Opponent Outlook
Arizona's offense is led by a trio of Wildcats batting over .400. Leadoff batters Regan Shockey (.455) and Sereniti Trice (.486) are joined by senior slugger Sydney Stewart (.422) as the team's top performers at the plate.
Two arms have dominated the circle for Arizona, as both Jalen Adams (15-4) and Rylie Holder (9-3) have handled most of the pitching responsibilities. Adams has 38 strikeouts and has allowed just a .247 batting average, while Holder has allowed opponents to bat just .310.
The Wildcats own a .365 batting average and have produced 277 runs on 315 hits. The team has 94 extra-base hits with 256 RBI and has drawn 126 walks. Arizona holds a collective 4.44 ERA and fields the ball at a .967 clip.
Series History
ISU and Arizona have met 11 times prior to this weekend, with the Wildcats owning an 11-0 record. The trip will be UA's first to the state of Iowa, as all previous meetings have either come in Tucson or at a neutral site.
