AMES, Iowa – In a battle of explosive offenses, Iowa State (21-15, 3-8 Big 12) came out on the wrong side of each part of Sunday's doubleheader against No. 14 Arizona (29-8, 11-3 Big 12), falling twice to the Wildcats.
A four-run first inning by the Wildcats in game one proved too much to overcome for the Cyclones, as ISU lost 10-7. The two teams combined to mash eight home runs in game one, only leaving a combined eight runners stranded.
The Cyclones held the potent Wildcat offense in check nearly all of game two, holding a 7-2 lead heading into the seventh. The No. 14 team in the country then flexed its offensive prowess, though, scoring six in the seventh to earn an 8-7 come-from-behind win.
Arizona 10, Iowa State 7
Arizona plated an early four runs to set the tone in game one, as the two teams scored 15 combined runs in the first three frames. Each side pounded four home runs, but it was the Wildcats who came out on the right side, earning a three-run win.
Kadence Shepherd and Sydney Malott each had a team-high two hits, with each collecting a homer. Shepherd was joined by Reagan Bartholomew and Tiana Poole as players who had multiple RBI.
For Arizona, four Wildcats collected multiple hits. Sydney Stewart and Kez Lucas tied for the team-lead in RBI with three apiece. In the circle, Jenae Berry (3-0) picked up the win as she hurled the final 4.2 frames and allowed just two runs.
How it Happened
A sacrifice fly and a three-run homer from Lucas opened up the scoring in game one of Sunday's doubleheader, as Arizona jumped out to a 4-nil lead.
The Cyclones answered in the bottom of the frame, as a Tatum Johnson double was driven in by Kadence Shepherd, who homered for the fifth game in a row to cut the Wildcat lead to two.
An RBI triple and another sacrifice fly from Arizona extended the Wildcat lead back out to four. Arizona would keep ISU out of the scoring column in the bottom of the inning before doing more damage in the third.
In the third, back-to-back solo jacks from Tele Jennings and Jenna Sniffen pushed the Arizona lead to 8-2. The Cyclones answered those jacks with three of their own, as Bartholomew (two-run), Malott (solo) and Poole (two-run) homered in the bottom of the inning to make it an 8-7 game and trim the Arizona lead to just one.
After those fireworks in the first three frames, the fourth inning was scoreless. Arizona tacked on two more insurance runs and eventually earned a 10-7 win.

After No. 14 Arizona took an early 2-0 lead, the Cyclones responded with seven unanswered runs – powered by 11 hits on the day. However, the 'Cats used a late seventh-inning rally to overcome the Cyclones and win. ISU stranded 12 in the loss.

How it Happened
Arizona plated runs in both the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead in Sunday's game two.
Iowa State's bats had the answer in the bottom of the second as both Andrews and Jessie Clemons had RBI to tie things up at two-all.
The Cyclones took their first lead of the day in the third inning, as Ford belted a single up the middle to score a run and put ISU on top, 3-2.
ISU's bats exploded in the fourth, as a pair of two-run shots, courtesy of Johnson and Ford, put the Cyclones up by five, 7-2.
The Cyclones held their five-run advantage until the seventh, as the Wildcats mounted a furious comeback to score six runs and take a late lead.
