COLUMBIA, Mo. ? No. 2 Iowa State forfeited the 133-pound weight class to No. 5 Missouri and it proved to be the difference at the Hearnes Center Sunday, as the Tigers scored an 18-15 victory. The win lifted Missouri to 18-4 in dual competition. ISU falls to 13-3. Iowa State held a 5-4 edge in the contested matches. “(ISU 133-pound All-American Nick Fanthorpe) could have wrestled today,” head coach Cael Sanderson said. “It's more important to have him ready to go for the NCAAs. This is just a dual meet. It still would have been nice to win though.”
It was Zabriskie's second match this season against a No. 1-ranked heavyweight. The Cyclone big man was victorious once again. In a matchup against top-rated Mark Ellis of Mizzou, the second-ranked Zabriskie edged the Tiger in extra time, 2-1 (TB1). Zabriskie was tireless in wearing down Ellis throughout the match and broke free from the Tiger's grasp in the first tie-breaker period to secure the victory. Zabriskie is now 26-2 this season. Ellis falls to 25-2.
ISU's Varner notched another quality victory on his season slate by controlling Missouri's Maxwell Askren by a score of 9-4. The top-ranked Cyclone used three takedowns in the first-period to power his way past the fourth-ranked Missouri wrestler. Varner, a Bakersfield, Calif. native, improves to 23-1 this season.
The dual started at 125 pounds and the intensity was kicked up a notch early. ISU's Tyler Clark fought off Troy Dolan of Missouri, 4-2 (TB1). Clark used a pair of back points in his turn on top in double-overtime to secure the victory.
After giving the Tigers six forfeiture points from the 133-pound class, the Cyclones dropped another weight on a controversial stalling call against Nick Gallick in sudden victory against MU's Marcus Hoehn. The Tiger took the match by decision, 4-3 (SV).
Redshirt freshman Iowa Stater Jerome Ward edged MU's Dorian Henderson by decision, 5-2.
Mitch Mueller, ranked 18th at 149 pounds, won over Missouri's Andrew Sherry 6-3 to net the decision.
Iowa State takes the mat next alongside the Cyclone gymnastics team for the second-ever Beauty and the Beast event at Hilton Coliseum Friday at 7 p.m. ISU plays host to No. 11 Minnesota. The Cyclones beat the Gophers, 18-15 last season in Minneapolis, Minn.
