Cyclones Fall To Quinnipiac, 8-3

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Quinnipiac used a five-run sixth inning to hand Iowa State an 8-3 loss in the Cyclones' opening game of the San Diego Classic Friday afternoon. The loss drops the Cyclones to 16-9 this season.
The Bobcats (2-11) got on the board first in the second inning on a rundown that scored Heather Maffeo from third.

Emily Bellush had a sacrifice fly and Maffeo singled to score a run in the third inning and put Quinnipiac on top 3-0.
After two scoreless innings the Bobcats got things going again in the sixth inning, scoring five runs. Maffeo again added to the Cyclones struggles, belting a two-run homer as Quinnipiac extended its lead to 8-0. It was Maffeo's second home run of the season.
The Cyclones were able to cut into the Quinnipiac lead in the bottom of the sixth with three runs. Carrie Monroe doubled to plate two runs and extend her hitting streak to a career-best five games. Courtney Wray then singled to score Monroe but that was all the closer the Cyclones would get.
Charissa Carlin (7-4) took the loss for the Cyclones, allowing eight runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. Rachel Zabriskie tossed a hitless 1.2 innings in relief, striking out three Bobcats along the way.
Iowa State continues tournament play tonight at 9 p.m. (CT) against host San Diego.
