ISU Falls To San Diego State In Extra Innings

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? San Diego State scored on a 10th-inning single to defeat Iowa State, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the San Diego Classic. The loss was ISU's third straight and drops the Cyclones to 16-11 this season.

The Aztecs were able to score in the 10th on Dani Sidoti's infield single that plated Jessica Camello, who was placed on second to start the inning because of the international tiebreaker rule.

In the top half of the 10th, ISU was unable to get a run across. Courtney Wray bunted Alex Johnson over to third with one out but Samantha Beasley got Amanda Bradberry on strikes and then forced Bianca Lopez to ground out to end the inning.

The Cyclones struck early, lighting up the scoreboard in the first inning on a wild play that started with Heidi Kidwell laying down a bunt with leadoff hitter Kelsey Kidwell on second base. On the play, San Diego State third baseman Christine Kulick threw the ball away and both Kidwells were able to score on the play.

Zabriskie held the Aztecs in check until the third inning. Kulick redeemed herself with a leadoff single and came in to score on Brittany Knudsen's base hit, cutting the lead to 2-1.

The Aztecs tied things up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth as Knudsen again came through with a run-scoring single that plated Felicia Reifschneider. Zabriskie avoided further damage by getting the next to batters out and sending it to the sixth tied up.

The Cyclones and Aztecs both put a run on the board in the ninth inning of play. The teams both took advantage of the tie breaker rule placing a runner on second to start the frame but neither was able to get any insurance runs across, sending the game to the 10th inning.

Rachel Zabriskie (9-7) took the loss for the Cyclones, giving up four runs on six hits. Zabriskie fanned eight Aztec hitters in the loss.

Carleigh Berry, Bradberry and Kelsey Kidwell each had two hits for the Cyclones in the loss.

ISU will face Cal State-Northridge later this evening before wrapping up tournament play Sunday against New Mexico State.
