Cyclones Beat Texas Tech For First Big 12 Win

AMES, Iowa ? Battling cold weather and snow, Iowa State picked up its first Big 12 win of the season dropping Texas Tech, 7-2, Saturday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
The falling snow didn't deter Iowa State (18-16, 1-2 Big 12) pitcher Rachel Zabriske (11-11), who had a solid performance in the circle, allowing just two runs on six hits. The Austin, Texas native struck out three and retired 10 straight Red Raider batters from the third inning to the fifth inning.

“I think it was important for her getting into a rhythm,” said ISU head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler. “She got into a nice rhythm where she could do something like retire 10 straight players.”
The Red Raiders (10-27, 0-6) opened up the scoring in the first inning scoring a run on a Megan Shupp double.
The Cyclones bounced right back in the bottom half of the inning.
Alex Johnson drove a homer deep over the centerfield wall to take the 2-1 lead. The home run was Johnson's third on the season and the 14th of her career. The two runs batted in gave her 88 for her career and moved her into a tie for second all-time at ISU with Erica Martinez (2000-03).
Iowa State added to its lead in the fifth when Kelsey Kidwell hit a double scoring Heidi Kidwell to score.
After Texas Tech scored a run in the top of the sixth inning, ISU responded getting four runs in the bottom of the frame. Amanda Bradberry keyed the rally with her first homer of the season, a two-run shot that scored Sydni Jones.
Kelsey Kidwell tied a career-high going 4-for-4. Carleigh Berry drove in a run and had two stolen bases in the game. Berry is now 14-for-15 on stolen base attempts this season.
Ashly Jacobs (7-15) took the loss for the Red Raiders, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work.
The Cyclones and Red Raiders will face off again tomorrow at noon.
