Andreassen Third After Day One

AMES, Iowa ? Freshman Jordon Andreassen led the way for the Iowa State track & field team Wednesday at the Kansas Relays. Andreassen stands in third place in the heptathlon with 2,856 points after the first day of competition. The Polk City, Iowa native finished first in the high jump, clearing a mark of 5-5 ?.
“We're really happy with where (Jordon) is at after day one,” assistant coach Pete Herber said. “We are not really looking at where she is at points wise; our goal is to get to 4,200 points and qualify for a spot for the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships.”
Andreassen has shown a lot of promise as a multi-event track and field athlete in her first year as a Cyclone. The freshman has already competed in the pentathlon in February at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships. The high jump, however, has always been her forte.
“I recruited her as a multi-event athlete,” Herber said. “But I knew that the high jump was one of her better events. So I knew she would be capable of doing some big things in that event and scoring a lot of points.”
Minnesota's Joey Schwecke is the leader after day one in the decathlon, totaling 3,728 points. Arkansas State's Amy Bowman leads the heptathlon with 3,102 points through four events. Day two of the Kansas Relays begins Thursday at 8:30 a.m. CDT with the decathlon's 110-meter hurdles.
