Cyclones Fall To OSU in Extra Innings

AMES, Iowa ? Oklahoma State pinch-hitter Taylor Marcum hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning as the Cowgirls defeated Iowa State, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex.

Marcum's blast negated Alex Johnson's game-tying homer in the bottom of the seventh that sent it to extra innings.

The Cyclones (20-25, 2-9) had struggled to solve Oklahoma State (29-15, 5-6) pitcher Sarah Odom until Johnson roped her team-leading fifth homer of the season to open the seventh. Odom (13-4) finished with six strikeouts while allowing just four hits over 7.1 innings.

Rachel Zabriskie (13-20) pitched well for the Cyclones, tying a career-high with 10 strikeouts while allowing three runs on eight hits.

The Cowgirls got on the scoreboard with a solo homer from Julie Ward in the second inning and the teams stayed scoreless until Johnson evened the score late in the game.

Iowa State had an opportunity in the bottom of the eighth, putting runners on first and second with just one out, before Anna Whiddon replaced Odom and retired the final two batters of the game to pick up her third save of the season.

Bianca Lopez went 2-for-3 to lead the Cyclones at the plate. Lopez is hitting .400 over the last five games.

Johnson's homer was the 16th of her career.
