AMES, Iowa ? First-place finishes from freshman Yonas Mebrahtu in the 1,500-meter run, freshman Nick Pearson in the long jump, freshman Mike Zika in the 12-pound hammer throw, and freshman Myranda Casterline in the 100-meter hurdles highlighted Iowa State's efforts at the Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola Saturday.
Freshman Josh Ster finished fourth in the 12-pound hammer throw (174-5). Both Zika and Ster's marks in the 12-pound hammer were good enough to qualify them provisionally for the U.S. Junior National Championships. ISU freshman Zack Richards finished third in the 16-pound hammer throw (179-9) while senior Robbie Utterback finished sixth (168-1).
Mebrahtu's time of 4:00.43 was good enough for first place in the 1,500-meter run. Cyclone freshman Rico Loy ran unattached and finished second (4:02.63).
Pearson's winning long jump was a personal best mark of 24-4 ? feet, good enough for a Division I regional qualifying mark. Pearson also tied for second in the high jump (6-6 ?). Earning third place, freshman Zack Little jumped 23-1 ?.
Utterback finished second in the discus throw with a mark of 160-5. Sophomore Luke Pinkelman finished fourth (157-9).
Sophomore Britta Christofferson (160-7), senior Amy Waggoner (159-6), freshman Laishema Hampton (158-4) and freshman Danielle Frere (158-0) placed second through fifth, respectively.
Casterline finished first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.94. Meghin Krambeck finished fifth (16.05).
