Cyclones Fall To Hawkeyes, 7-1

IOWA CITY, Iowa ? Iowa scored all of its runs in the fourth and fifth innings to defeat Iowa State, 7-1, Tuesday afternoon at Pearl Field in Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series action.

The Hawkeyes (30-9) scored two runs in the fourth inning before breaking the game open with a five-run fifth inning to snap a two-game losing streak.

Amanda Zust (16-2) took care of the rest for Iowa, allowing just four hits to pick up the win for the Hawkeyes. Zust kept the Cyclones (19-21) off the scoreboard until the seventh inning, striking out three while walking just one.

The Hawkeyes got things started in the fourth inning with hits by the first three hitters. Liz Watkins opened the inning with a double down the left field line and scored on Katie Brown's double in the next at bat. Brown then came around to score on Missy Mazur's single to make it 2-0 after four.

Iowa would add five more runs in its next at bat.

The Hawks took advantage of ISU third baseman Courtney Wray's low throw that bounded down the fence in right field, allowing the batter, Taylor Leichsenring, to score on the play. Watkins then belted her seventh homer of the year to make it 5-0 before Jenny Schuelke tripled to score Mazur, who had reached on an error.

The scoring for the inning was capped as Schuelke came across on a wild pitch.

Zust struggled with her command in the seventh, putting the first three runners on with a free pass. Amanda Bradberry scored on a Katie Harms' groundout for the Cyclones' only run of the contest.

Zabriskie (12-16) took the loss for the Cyclones, allowing seven runs, four of which were earned, in the game. Lauren Kennewell tossed a scoreless sixth inning in relief for ISU.

Iowa State's four hits came from Wray, Harms, Sydni Jones and Renae Cooper. Jones had a double in the second inning but was stranded on the bases. Cooper, a sophomore, collected her first career hit in a pinch hit appearance in the seventh inning.

Iowa State will return to action Friday when it plays host to Baylor at 2 p.m. at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
