CEDAR FALLS, Iowa ? Second-seed Iowa State surrendered only two weights to No. 7 Maryland in a 26-6 rout in the second round of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Saturday in the UNI Dome. Cyclone 141-pound backup Dalton Jensen made the biggest wave in the dual, by pinning ninth-ranked Terrapin, Alex Krom. ISU advances to the semifinals to face No. 3 Ohio State Sunday at 11 a.m.
“It was big because the match was still up for grabs at that point,” ISU head coach Kevin Jackson said. “(Dalton) was down four points too. That was a big swing for us with a lot of momentum after that. It boosted the team. It was good to see Dalton (Jensen) get excited for helping the team.”
Jensen, who is subbing for injured ISU All-American Nick Gallick, was happy to help out in the ISU team effort.
“Anytime I can get the top position, I'll take it,” Jensen said. “I'll take what I can get against (Krom). It was a big opportunity for me to step up. I'm behind the best guy in the country, so I have big shoes to fill. Anyway I can do it, I'll be there.”
In the marquee matchup of the dual, top-ranked 197-pounder Jake Varner held off the upset-minded Hudson Taylor of Maryland. Varner chose neutral in the third period to dictate the pace against his fourth-ranked opponent for the remainder of the bout. The Cyclone three-time NCAA finalist was victorious by decision, 5-4.
The Cyclones won eight matches in the dual. Iowa State 125-pounder Andrew Long narrowly missed owning a major decision of his Maryland counterpart, James Knox. The Cyclone's grasp was broken by the Terp in the waning seconds to keep the ISU victory to a 10-3 decision.
“We wrestled kind of sluggish,” Jackson said. “We didn't win each match by as much as we possibly could.”
Third-ranked Jon Reader scored a decision for the Cyclones with an 8-3 victory over No. 11 Josh Asper of Maryland. At 184 pounds, ISU's Jerome Ward edged the Terrapin's Corey Peltier, 7-5.
ISU 149-pound senior Mitch Mueller notched a sound decision with an 11-4 victory over Jon Kohler of Maryland. Cyclone Andrew Sorenson followed with a victory at 157 pounds over UM's Kyle John, 4-3.
To conclude the dual, Kyle Simonson stepped out at heavyweight for Iowa State and delivered a 4-1 decision of Maryland's Pat Gilmore.
ISU was penalized one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct following the 125-pound match.
