CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Jamie Vanderbeken scored a career-high 24 points to aid Iowa State to a 60-47 win at Virginia Thursday night in Charlottesville, Va. Vanderbeken, who was 9-of-12 from the field and 5-of-8 from 3-point range, helped the Cyclones improve to 12-2 on the season.
The Cavaliers fall to 8-5 on the season.
The Cyclones held a 21-point lead in the second half and weathered a mini-Cavalier run to record its second consecutive road win, marking the first time the Cyclones have won back-to-back road games since the 2005-06 season.
"This is a big win for our program," Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said. "Anytime you get a win on the road vs. an ACC team is huge. Our guys are playing with chips on their shoulders right now. We needed Jamie to have a big game tonight, and he answered. I am really proud of the guys."
Iowa State jumped out to a 15-point lead in the first half and held a 24-15 advantage at the break. Vanderbeken had the hot hand for the Cyclones early, scoring 13 of ISU's first 19 points.
Iowa State shot just 38.5 percent from the field in the first half, but held UV to just 15 points and 20 percent shooting. The 15 points scored by UV in the first half tied for the ninth-lowest half total by an Iowa State opponent in the modern era (1950-present). It was the lowest half output by a Cavalier team in John Paul Jones Arena.
Iowa State began the second half by making four 3-pointers to push the lead to 38-17. Vanderbeken and Christopherson each hit two to help ISU put together a 14-0 run. The Cyclones held a 55-34 lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the game and remained ahead by double digits the rest of the way.
Scott Christopherson kept his consecutive game 3-pointers made streak alive by hitting a trio of 3-pointers in the game. Christopherson has made a 3-pointer in 17 consecutive games, the third-best streak in school history. Christopherson finished the game with 14 points.
Diante Garrett ended the game with eight boards and eight assists while playing all 40 minutes. Garrett became the third player in school history to record 1,000 points and 500 assists in a career, joining Jeff Hornacek and Terry Woods.
The Cyclones are back in action on Monday (Jan. 3), playing host to Northern Illinois at 7 p.m.
