AMES, Iowa? The No. 13 Iowa State gymnastics team was locked in a tight back-and-forth affair with Minnesota Friday evening in Hilton Coliseum, but the Cyclones answered every Gopher rally attempt to win 195.475-195.200. The win propelled ISU to 6-5 on the season.
ISU sophomore Michelle Browning was a key culprit in the Cyclone victory, posting a career-high 39.350 to win the all-around competition. Browning's night was capped with a 9.925 on floor, which tied for the 13th-highest tally in program history.
“She had a great night, and I was really impressed,” ISU head coach Jay Ronayne said. “She wasn't great in warm-ups, but she really turned it on when it counted.”
Browning's effort earned her the “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” that goes to the Iowa State gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans. It was Browning's third-consecutive all-around title.
The Cyclones started on vault, scoring a 48.700, just below their season average of 48.771. ISU was led by a pair of 9.800s from Ceilia Maccani and Shea Anderson to start the competition. Celine Paulus added a 9.700 for Iowa State. Minnesota was strong on bars, posting a 49.025 to take the early 49.025-48.700 lead.
Iowa State delivered a season-high bars score on its second rotation with a 49.150. ISU was led by Jody McKellar's career-high 9.875, while Maccani posted a season-high 9.875 on the apparatus, as the pair tied for the event crown. Jacquelyn Holmes tied her season-best score with a 9.825, while Ashley Kent (9.800) and Megan Barnes (9.775) were each strong as well. The Cyclones' stellar bars effort pushed them into a 97.850-97.675 lead at the midway point.
ISU could not take its momentum from bars to beam, as the Cyclones had to count a fall on the apparatus for the first time this season en route to a 48.400 on the event. Despite the low team score, Browning registered a career-high-tying 9.875. Kent, the 13th-ranked beam worker in the country, posted a season-high-tying 9.875. Minnesota gained minimal ground on the Cyclones with a 49.425 on floor. With one rotation remaining, Iowa State led 146.250-146.100.
The Cyclones notched their highest score on any event to close out the evening on floor, with a 49.225. The score tied the 16th-highest score in ISU program history. Browning's 9.925 led ISU, while Paulus tacked on a career-best 9.875. Melanie Tham also posted a career high on the event with a 9.850. Anna Robey (9.800) and Anderson (9.775) were also strong contributors for the Cyclones.
“They attacked their floor routines and that is what we want them to do,” Ronayne said. “There's nothing to hold back, and we wanted to reward our fans.”
Browning took home the floor title for the second-straight meet.
The Cyclones close out their home slate in their next contest when they face Iowa in a Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series matchup March 5, at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. The meet will also be Senior Night, honoring the careers of: Barnes, Maccani, Kent, Nikki Dilbert, Katie Sweetin, Robey and Tham.
