SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Erica Miller delivered a run-scoring single in the sixth inning and Iowa State added another in the seventh to defeat Cal Poly, 4-2, Friday afternoon in the Mustang Classic. With the win, ISU climbs back to .500 this season with an 11-11 record.
The Cyclones lit up the scoreboard in the first inning with back-to-back triples by Kelsey Kidwell and Courtney Wray. After Cal Poly pitcher Anna Cahn retired the first batter, Kidwell tripled to left and came home on Wray's ninth career triple to make it 1-0.
The Mustangs took the lead in the second on a two-run homer by Stephanie Correia off ISU starter Rachel Zabriskie.
The Cyclones had an answer and Zabriskie settled into a groove, shutting down Cal Poly over the final five innings.
ISU tied things up in the fourth on Sydni Jones' third homer of the season and the 18th of her career.
With neither team having much success at the plate, ISU took advantage of Cahn's sixth inning struggles. Alex Johnson walked and Cahn plunked Jones to give the Cyclones runners at first and second with one-out.
Miller then delivered with a single to center that scored Johnson.
The Cyclones tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on Kidwell's single that scored Carrie Monroe to make it 4-2.
Zabriskie sent the Mustangs down in order in the seventh to improve to 11-6 this season. The junior retired the final seven batters of the game and struck out five on her way to the win.
Miller and Kidwell led the Cyclones with two hits each.
Iowa State will face Cal-Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. tonight.
