Cyclones Rally Comes Up Short To Eastern Illinois

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Iowa State spotted Eastern Illinois five runs in the first two innings and rallied but came up short, falling , 5-3, in the opening game of the Razorback Invitational. ISU drops to 7-10 this season with the loss.

Iowa State's Lauren Kennewell struggled to find her mark early as the Cyclones spotted the Panthers five runs, two in the first and three more in the second.

At the plate, ISU was slow to solve EIU pitcher Amber May, who entered the contest 2-2 with a 3.27 ERA. The Cyclones were hitless until the fourth inning when Carleigh Berry broke up the no-hitter with a single to lead off the inning.

Kelsey Kidwell followed Berry with another single before Alex Johnson put the Cyclones on the board with a single of her own to drive in her 16th run of the season. Sydni Jones then flew out to right field to score Kelsey Kidwell and Courtney Wray recorded the Cyclones' fourth hit of the inning to score Johnson and cut the lead to 5-3.

Tori Torrescano relieved Kennewell in the second inning and kept the Cyclones in the contest, shutting Eastern Illinois out over the final four innings.

But it was too late for the Cyclones, who threatened in the seventh by putting the first two runners on before May stranded Bianca Lopez and Amanda Bradberry in scoring position to pick up the win.

Kennewell (0-3) took the loss for the Cyclones, allowing five runs, two of which were earned, on three hits in an inning of action. Torrescano tossed five innings of one-hit ball in relief.

May (3-2) got the win for the Panthers, holding ISU to three runs on six hits.

Johnson led the Cyclones, who held a six to four edge in hits, going 2-for-3.

Kiley Holtz drove in a pair of runs for the Panthers.

The Cyclones will be back in action at approximately 2:15 p.m. against Southern Mississippi.
