AMES, Iowa - The second game of the softball doubleheader between Iowa State and No. 10 Missouri saw the teams produce a combined 23 runs and 28 hits with the Tigers coming out on top 14-9 Wednesday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The loss drops ISU to 25-25 on the season and 3-11 in Big 12 play.
Missouri (38-9, 8-6 Big 12) started the second game of the doubleheader with a bang. The Tigers got two runners on with infield singles before Jenna Marston cleared the bases with a three-run home run off of Rachel Zabriskie over the right-center field wall. Ashley Fleming added to the total in the next at bat with a home run of her own over the left field wall to extend the lead to 4-0.
That spelled the end of Zabriskie's day as the Cyclones brought in Lauren Kennewell. After recording the first out of the game, the sophomore hit Lindsey Muller with a pitch. Shana White sent a single into left field which got past Carleigh Berry to allow the runner to score and making the margin 5-0.
Alex Johnson pulled a run back for Cyclones in the bottom of the second with a home run just over the left field wall to reduce the deficit to 5-1. It was the seventh home run on the season for the senior and 25th of her ISU career.
The home runs continued to fly out in the top of the third as Muller sent a solo home run well over the left field wall to give the Tigers a 6-1 advantage. Missouri made upped the score to 7-1 after getting two on via a walk and a single. Rhea Taylor sent a single through the right side of the infield allowing White to come home.
MU put another one on the board in the top of the fifth. A leadoff double by Nicole Hudson was followed by pinch runner Abby Vock advancing to third on a Gina Schneider groundout. Taylor drove home the run on a sac fly to centerfield, making the score 8-1. Catherine Lee added to the margin with a home run to centerfield to make it 9-1.
In the bottom frame of the fifth, Amandine Habben reached on an error and Berry sent a line drive into left-center field for a double to put runners on second and third with one down. Kelsey Kidwell sent a grounder through the right side to bring home Habben. Miller stepped up to the plate and reached on an error, plating Berry to reduce the deficit to 9-3.
Missouri continued to pile up the runs in the top of the sixth. The Tigers loaded the bases for Taylor, who hit a two-RBI single to make the score 11-3.
Being down eight going into the bottom half of the inning, ISU had to get a run to keep the game going. They got the run and a few more to go with it. The Cyclones produced a huge bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs in the frame. Iowa State got a single to start the bottom of the sixth from Dalyn Varela off of Lisa Simmons. Johnson reached on a fielder's choice which resulted in a throwing error, leaving two on with nobody out. After Bianca Lopez grounded out to first, Carrie Monroe produced an RBI single to make the score 11-4.
Habben then recorded her first hit as a Cyclone with a single to center, plating Johnson for the first RBI of her career and reducing the deficit to 11-5. ISU put another run across the plate as Kelsey Kidwell hit a single and a throwing error allowed Monroe to come across. Erica Miller reduced the deficit to 11-8 with a two-RBI double to right field, plating Habben and Kidwell.
Missouri switched to Jana Hainey in the ring but ISU still produced a run as Wray sent an RBI-double to reduce the deficit to 11-9.
The Tigers padded their lead in the seventh. After a leadoff double by Marston and a walk by Fleming, Marla Schweisberger had an RBI double to center to make the lead 12-9. Fleming came across the plate on a groundout by White to put its 13th run on the board. Pinch runner Jaydee Young came across the plate on a Torrescano wild pitch to make the score 14-9.
Zabriskie suffered the loss (20-15) for the Cyclones. Zabriskie gave up four runs on four hits without recording an out to start the game.
Muller picked up the win for the Tigers (5-1), going five innings, giving up seven hits and three runs (one earned) and striking out one. Hainey picked up her second save of the season in relief, giving up one hit in 1.1 innings.
Iowa State wraps up the home portion of its schedule this coming weekend and they host the Texas Longhorns. The Cyclones play Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m.
