AMES, Iowa - Chris Babb and Tyrus McGee combined for 9-for-10 shooting from 3-point range to pace Iowa State to a 92-60 win over Western Carolina Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
Babb was a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc en route to his team-high 18 points, tying the school record for best 3-point percentage in a game. McGee had 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from downtown. The Cyclones were 11-of-18 as a team from 3-point range, the 15th time in the Fred Hoiberg era where ISU made 10 or more 3-pointers in a game.
The Cyclones improve to 2-1, while Western Carolina falls to 2-2.
Iowa State was up by just six points (52-46) early in the second half until a decisive 12-0 run gave the Cyclones a 64-46 lead with 11:06 left in the game. McGee hit a pair of treys and Babb connected on one in the run to help put the game out of reach.
The Cyclones were hot early from 3-point range to forge to a 10-point lead (25-15) at the midway point of the first half. Chris Babb was 3-for-3 and Tyrus McGee was 2-for-2 from beyond the arc to help ISU jump out early.
The Catamounts kept chipping away, tying the game at 32-32 with 3:20 left in the first half. ISU went five minutes with one field goal and Harouna Mutombo scored three hoops during the run to help close the gap.
Babb hit his fourth trey of the first half at the 1:11 mark to help ISU go into the break with a 38-34 lead. Babb had 13 first-half points and Mutumbo tallied 16 in the opening stanza for WCU.
Royce White ended the game with 17 points and seven rebounds. The Cyclones held a 34-16 advantage on the glass and shot 65.3 percent from the field. It marks the first time the Cyclones shot 60 percent or better since shooting 61.5 percent vs. Tennessee State (11-24-09).
Iowa State is back in action on Tuesday vs. Northern Colorado. Tip-off is set at 7 p.m. CST.
