SAN MARCOS, Texas - A seventh inning rally came up short for the Cyclones on Friday night as the Texas Bobcats held on for the 7-5 win on the first night of the CenturyLink Classic. The loss drops Iowa State to 5-2 on the season while Texas State improves to 3-3.
Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Cyclones, acting as the home team, Tori Torrescano started the inning with a single, followed by a foul out by Dalyn Varela. Freshman Sara Davison got her only hit, a single off Bobcats starter Chandler Hall, before pinch hitter Bree Holliday struck out swinging to bring catcher Amandine Habben to the plate with two outs.
Habben doubled to center field to pull Iowa State within two but it was too late and the Hall finished strong, getting a ground out from Carleigh Berry to end the threat and the game.
It was a rough night for Iowa State's starting pitcher Rachel Zabriskie who allowed nine hits and six earned runs in six innings of work. Zabriskie struggled early in each inning, allowing the leadoff hitter to reach base five times.
An error by Iowa State second baseman Sara Rice plated the first Bobcat in the top of the first inning but the Cyclones responded in the bottom half of the frame, scoring two on an error by Haley Lemons and taking the 2-1 lead.
An Allison Snow solo homerun to lead off the second inning started a run of six unanswered runs for Texas State who took a 7-2 lead scoring two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings sandwiched around Snow's second RBI of the night which came in the fifth inning.
The Cyclones threatened the Bobcats' lead more than once during the game, stranding the bases loaded in the third and leaving runners at second and third in both the fifth and sixth innings. As a team, Iowa State was 1-for-13 in RBI situations in the game and 3-for-20 with runners on base.
Iowa State's only other run of the night came in the sixth inning when pinch runner Jennifer Drahozal came around to score on an error by Texas State shortstop Jordan Masek.
On Saturday the Cyclones and Bobcats meet again at 1:30 CST. Iowa State plays again at 4 p.m. CST facing the Purdue Boilermakers.
