MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.—The No 23 Iowa State gymnastics team dropped a 195.600-194.950 decision Sunday afternoon in the Sports Pavilion to No. 15 Minnesota.
Iowa State (7-3-1) gymnast Michelle Browning took home a share of the floor title with a season-high-tying 9.875 on the event. Browning's 9.875 also ties the highest score by any Cyclone on floor this season. Browning tied with Minnesota's Kayla Slechta for the floor crown.
“Compared to Friday night, we looked sluggish today,” Iowa State gymnastics head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We made a couple of mistakes that we don't normally make, particularly starting on bars where we had a fall that set us back.”
Minnesota (7-3) gymnasts went on to win the remainder of the event titles. They were: Kayla Slechta (vault – 9.875), Lucy Ennis (bars – 9.850), Shannon Golich (beam – 9.850) and Kendra Elm (all-around – 39.100).
“We expected the number 15 team in the country to be good competition, and they did not disappoint us,” Ronayne said. “We need to be sharper to beat teams of that caliber. What we did against Iowa at home Friday is the effort we need to take on the road the remainder of the season.”
Iowa State's Michelle Shealy (vault – 9.825), Jody McKellar (beam – 9.800), Browning (floor – 9.875) and Elizabeth Stranahan (floor – 9.825) all either set or tied their season high at the meet.
Iowa State competes against Iowa in its next meet Friday at 7 p.m. in Iowa City. The meet is part of the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series.
