CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Cyclones dropped a heartbreaker to Notre Dame on Saturday at the Cougar Classic, losing 1-0 to the Fighting Irish. The loss drops Iowa State to 8-5 on the year. Notre Dame, receiving votes in both polls, improves to 7-0.
Cyclone starter Rachel Zabriskie (4-2) was solid, allowing four hits and just one run in six innings of work but Notre Dame's Laura Winter (2-0) shut down Iowa State's offense, hitting .343 entering the game. Winter gave up just two hits in her seven innings on the mound and no Cyclone got closer than Sara Davison who reached second base in the second inning.
Notre Dame's only run of the night was an Amy Buntin single with two outs in the Irish fourth to score shortstop Kati Fleury who had a single to lead off the inning.
The Cyclones played Drexel immediately following the loss to Notre Dame and the game was called with the Cyclones leading 4-2 in the fifth. The teams will resume play at 7 a.m. CST on Sunday morning followed by Iowa State's weekend finale against host team Charleston at 1 p.m. CST.
