CHARLESTON, S.C. - Stellar pitching led the Cyclones to a split on Sunday at the Cougar Classic. The Cyclones returned to the field on Sunday morning to finish their game with Drexel (3-5), called after five innings on Saturday night, and to take on host Charleston (8-5) in the afternoon. Iowa State moves to 9-6 on the season after its 5-2 win over Drexel and 2-1 loss to the Cougars.
Senior Rachel Zabriskie (4-3, 1 save) picked up the save against the Dragons and the loss against the Cougars despite allowing only one earned run in her start. It was the second time over the weekend that Zabriskie was charged with a loss after only giving up one earned run.
Tori Torrescano (2-2) pitched four innings of no-hit softball, with one unearned run scored, to pick up her second win of the year, over Drexel.
Starting Saturday night for the Cyclones, Bree Holliday pitched one inning, in which Drexel plated one unearned run, before giving way to Torrescano who led the Iowa State comeback win against the Dragons.
Torrescano was on the mound in the top of the third when the Dragons scored their second and final run, also unearned, on a fielder's choice by catcher Paige Collings to bring home Jenn Reading who had reached on an error with one out in the frame.
Iowa State got on the board in the fourth as Jennifer Drahozal, pinch running for catcher Amandine Habben, touched home on a Heidi Kidwell single. The Cyclones struck again in the fifth, taking the 4-2 lead with RBIs from freshman Sara Davison and Carleigh Berry (two).
Returning to the diamond early Sunday morning, Cyclones head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler called on ace Zabriskie to finish off the Dragons. Zabriskie earned her first save of the year striking out five of her six batters faced to secure the win.
A first inning attack on Zabriskie, getting her third start of the weekend, ended in a 1-0 deficit for the Cyclones after Amanda Lonergan doubled with two outs and scored Katie Forbes from first.
An Iowa State fielding error sent home Kaitlyn White in the fifth to add padding to the Cougars' lead.
Cyclone third baseman Erica Miller, entering the game hitting .300 with runners on base, tripled with two outs in the Iowa State half of the frame to score junior Bianca Lopez and draw the Cyclones within one, trailing 2-1.
Iowa State would get no closer though as Charleston pitcher Stephanie Saylors (3-3) worked three quick outs from the visiting squad to end the game in the bottom of the seventh.
