TULSA, Okla. - It was a long day for the Cyclone softball team at the Holiday Inn Tulsa-City Center Festival. The Cyclones dropped their two games on the day, falling 8-0 to Ohio State (5-12) and 9-3 to host Tulsa (12-6) in the day's finale. Iowa State drops to 9-8 on the year with the losses.
Pitching in the first game of the weekend, Bree Holliday (2-2) was touched for five earned runs on seven hits in the loss to the Buckeyes. Senior Rachel Zabriskie (4-4) fought the wind through most of her four innings against the Golden Hurricane, giving up eight runs on eight hits.
Freshman Anna Cole got her first start of the season against Tulsa, playing right field.
Leading off the day against Ohio State, the Cyclones struggled from the get-go, allowing three unearned runs on four errors in the game. The Buckeyes plated eight overall against Holliday and reliever Tori Torrescano while the Iowa State offense sputtered, managing only one hit against Audrey Plant (1-1).
Four Buckeyes recorded RBIs against the Cyclones to end a six-game losing streak which included a loss to North Dakota earlier on Friday.
First baseman Dalyn Varela had the lone hit for Iowa State, a single in the second inning. Carleigh Berry was the only Cyclone to reach second base, reaching base on an error and advancing on a groundout by Heidi Kidwell.
Iowa State struck first in the night cap against Tulsa, scoring two in the top of the third. Kidwell drove in Berry before Sara Davison touched home on an error by Golden Hurricane third baseman Jill Barrett.
Tulsa came alive in their next two turns at the plate, tying the game at two in the bottom of the third and sending six more runners home in the fourth for the 8-2 lead. Tulsa shortstop Samantha Cobb was the star for the home team, driving home four, including a three-run homer in the fourth.
Pitcher Aimee Creger (6-1) struck out 12, allowed four hits and only two earned runs in six innings. Iowa State threatened a comeback in the top of the sixth after Creger walked Dalyn Varela and Erica Miller to lead off the inning.
Jennifer Drahozal and Erin Johnson, running for Varela and Miller, respectively, advanced on a groundout by designated player Katie Harms and Drahozal came home on a wild pitch to draw within five before the end of the inning.
Lauren Kennewell, who replaced Zabriskie in the fifth, gave up three hits and one run in the loss.
